British royal family news divulges that Prince William will be the one this year to lay a wreath on behalf of the Queen at the Anzac Day ceremony at the Cenotaph.

William the Duke of Cambridge will perform the service by laying a wreath at the ceremony on April 25 in remembrance of Australians and New Zealanders who lost their lives in conflict. The event takes place at Westminster Abbey.

At the ceremony roughly 300 to 400 former and active military personnel and their families, as well as members of veterans associations, will gather at the Cenotaph for the wreath-laying. In recent years it has fallen to members of the Royal Family to lay the wreath on the Queen’s behalf.

Once upon a time Harry the Duke of Excess carried out the role in 2016 and 2018. He is now living in n California with his wife Meghan Markle after they left the palace in a huff and a puff of righteous indignation about their allowance being cut off (among other things).

This year the traditional abbey church service will feature an address by the Dean of Westminster, readings from the New Zealand and Australian High Commissioners, prayers read by children of each country, and a Maori waiata performed by the Ngati Ranana London Maori Club.

On April 25 the two events will follow a dawn service at Wellington Arch at London’s Hyde Park Corner. That event will be attended by the Queen’s cousin the Duke of Gloucester.

In 2021 William marked Anzac Day with a message to the New Zealand and Australian High Commissions in London: “Today we stand together to reflect not only on their sacrifices, but also their courage, sense of duty, and their famously indomitable spirit.”

In 2019 he was on a two-day trip to New Zealand and he honored the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack, and also laid a wreath during an Anzac Day memorial service in Auckland.

April 25 marks the anniversary of the start of the First World War Gallipoli landings, and it is commemorated as a national day of remembrance for Australia and New Zealand as thousands of Anzac troops – Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – died in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign.
