They met in college and theirs is a true fairy tale with a handsome prince, a kind princess and the world at their feet. And yet was there a proverbial ‘girl who got away’ in William’s past?

Royal Family News – Who Is Jessa Craig?

In 2011 Kate and William married but it’s been reported that William and Jecca had a “pretend engagement.”

Prince William and Jecca Craig met during William’s gap year from Eton College. That would be before he went to St. Andrew’s and met Kate. But the Telegraph, “spotted William and Jecca hanging out with one another at Jecca’s home in Kenya in May 2010, only six months before he asked Kate to become his wife.” Clearly she still had a place in his heart, if only as a friend.

According to Us Weekly, Prince William and Jecca were together again in 2014, “when they went on a hunting trip in Spain with a few of their pals. The Duchess of Cambridge stayed home with their then-one-year-old son Prince George at the time.”

Then, in 2016 William attended Jecca’s wedding to Jonathan Baillie, with Vanity Fair reporting that, “William once again left Kate and George at home to attend the wedding of his supposed ‘first love.’”

None of this is any cause for alarm, as the bond between Kate and William seems to grow stronger with each passing year. Instead, it seems that William’s connection to Jecca has a lot to do with her father.

Royal Family News – William and Kate Just Completed A Caribbean Tour

Prince William met Jecca’s father in 1995 during a visit to their family’s conservation ranch in Kenya and apparently Ian Craig ignited William’s passion for conservation.

William has said that Ian helped him become a conservationist during that trip. According to the Daily Mail, he said “I had such an amazing experience, where I got to see [Ian] darting an elephant for research purposes, and I must have been 16, 17, something like that. Back then, conservation was very much a case of: put wildlife over here, put people over there. Don’t let them meet. And Ian came along with a pretty radical idea, which was: ‘You can’t keep these two entities separate. They need to be together.’ This is where I started to realize what the job is.”

Last year William launched the Earthshot Prize, a ten-year award scheme for ideas that will help preserve the plant.
