In her isolation, it was said, she turned again to Bashir. He came a confidant and a supportive figure who influenced her life as her marriage wound down.

But Bashir was not like the smooth operators at the palace, well-groomed and deferring. He was secretive and an outsider.

After the program aired on November 20, 1995, he visited the palace to pick up a Christmas card from the Princess. He parked in De Vere Gardens, a few streets away from the palace, and waited for her butler, Paul Burrell, to fetch him.

Bashir liked to hide in the back seat or even squirm into the truck to avoid detection.

Why the subterfuge? So that he would not have to give his name or show his face to the palace police. That way there would be no record of his arrival effectively fooling everyone.

For the record, Bashir was not the only male Diana had sneak in to see her. It’s been widely reported that a clique of friends and lovers was smuggled into the palace in a similar way.

Some in the Princess’s circle said he tricked her into giving the interview. Some at the BBC questioned his reporting and investigative methods. And yet Diana herself came to his defense saying, “He was the right person coming along with the right questions.”
