Now a royal watcher is talking about those last fateful hours.

Richard Kay Is Speaking Out About Princess Diana

Richard Kay is a royal reporter who befriended the late princess. He appears in a new documentary titled “Diana,” which drops this week in the U.K.

According to Kay he talked to the 36-year-old right before her untimely death in 1997. “The police said that the last call she made was to me,” said Kay, as quoted by U.K.’s Mirror. Kay said that his friend was “in quite a good place” but “she wanted to come back and see her boys.”

He said that the thing Princess Diana wanted most was to reunite with her two sons.

Princess Diana’s Last Phone Call

At the time of their mother’s tragic death Prince William and Prince Harry were 15 and 12 respectively. Kay said that Diana was enthusiastic about beginning a new chapter in her life. “She was desperate to try and make a fresh start and do something different,” he said. “To explore a different kind of royalty.”

In the documentary “Our Mother Diana: Her Life and Legacy,” which aired in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of her death, Harry recalled the last phone call he had with his mother. According to him his brother was present and it was a brief call. He said they were playing with their cousins at Balmoral, Queen Elizabeth’s Scottish residence.

Harry said, “If I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother the things that I would – the things I would have said to her.”

“There’s not a day that William and I don’t wish that she was still around, and we wonder what kind of a mother she would be now, and what kind of a public role she would have, and what a difference she would be making,” Harry noted.

The brothers are expected to come together on July 1 at Kensington Palace to unveil a statue in honor of their mother on what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday. They commissioned the statue together years back and today they live on different continents.
