Diana eventually went on to roil the family with her gripes and behavior, much like her son Harry is doing in the present day.
But at the time there was one ally who was willing to give her a chance. It was Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Margaret, who initially welcomed Diana as a newbie.

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, Margaret saw a kindred spirit in Diana. He told People that both had a rough road conforming to the rules and regulations of the royal family.
He said, “Neither of them were hunting, shooting or fishing types. Margaret put her arm around Diana. She could see they were two metropolitan princesses.”

“Princess Margaret came to her rescue, suggesting to the Queen that Diana was having difficulties adjusting to her role and that she should cut her some slack,” Morton writes in his new book Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters. “The Queen, who avoids family confrontation if at all possible, took her sister’s advice.”

Morton added about Margaret, “She did say, ‘Just give Diana a chance.” Apparently the queen heeded her advice and Diana was given a looser leash. But Diana eventually bit the hand that had supported her and that resulted in Margaret drastically changing her attitude toward Diana.
According to Morton, that moment came in 1995 when Diana had her infamous interview in which she ticked off one by one her grievances to BBC reporter Martin Bashir. With that interview, “the guillotine really came down,” says Morton.

In the interview that still haunts the family, and led to a host of changes at the time, most notably Diana’s divorce, she spoke candidly about the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles.
This type of reality show was unheard of back then and the royal family were shocked but took swift action against her.
Margaret, who died in 2002 at age 71, “had always defended the Queen and was always loyal to her. She felt Diana let her sister down. She was the Praetorian guard of her sister.”
