Royal Family News: Queen Attends Chelsea Flower Show In A Golf Cart, A Historic First

British royal family news shows that the queen’s mobility issues have been eased significantly with the use of a motorized golf cart. She has canceled many significant engagements recently due to mobility problems but today she was seen out and about in a brand new, fancy cart which was driven by a chauffeur in a black suit and tie as well as a smart cap.

She chose the Chelsea Flower Show to make her British debut in a golf cart. It is one of her favorite events and she beamed from her seat, obviously delighted to not have to miss her special occasion.

The queen will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee in June, an event commemorating 70 years on the throne. But her attendance at the flower show predates her ascension to the throne as she has, “been coming here almost every year since she was a child,” according to the Daily Mail.

The queen was resplendent in a pink dress and at the show she looked at displays dedicated to mental health, lifeboats, the community, and herself.

In the Grand Marquee she came face to face with a giant silhouette of her own head, made by royal florist Simon Lycett and comprised of 70 hand-thrown flower pots. Each pot contained her favorite flower, lily of the valley. She was told that the plants would be donated to local schools.

It has been a full three years since the Queen was able to attend the show. During her last visit she was on foot, but that was, “Pre-pandemic, pre-widowhood, pre-‘episodic mobility problems.’”

The Queen’s conveyance is a £62,000 Daria battery-powered golf cart. It is a high tech vehicle fit for a queen with its own refrigerator and entertainment screen.

It is likely that she will continue to use the car as needed. The outlet reported that, “Her Majesty had reservations about using one for an official engagement, especially for one as high profile as this. If she is to turn up at an event, she, very understandably, wishes to look the part. The late Queen Mother voiced similar concerns before she was coaxed into a golf buggy in her late nineties in order to attend race meetings.”

After the queen missed the recent State Opening of Parliament, there were concerns that she might have to forgo some of her major Platinum Jubilee events. But with her debut in the Queen-mobile, perhaps she has broken the ice of awkward and will now feel comfortable enough to travel in it in public, which would no doubt delight the throngs of admirers who turn out to see her wherever she goes.
