Royal Family News: Is Queen Elizabeth OK?
Truss, 47, is Queen Elizabeth’s 15th prime minister. She has been Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs and Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019. She won 57% of the votes of Conservative Party members to become its leader Monday, beating Rishni Sunak to replace Boris Johnson.
Truss traveled to Balmoral Castle, where the Queen spends her summers, and was formally appointed on Tuesday. Interestingly, Truss was a staunch liberal in her younger days, and pictures of her and her parents at protests were circulated after her victory. It is reported that her father, a retired maths professor, cannot reconcile himself to his daughter’s political switch and is having difficulty acknowledging her new reality. Whatever happened to being proud of one’s children’s accomplishments? Too many families have been ripped apart over philosophy, perhaps Truss’ father can come around to accepting his daughter for who she is and agree to disagree? The world does not need another petulant, prominent UK family at war over petty slights.

Truss is the third, and youngest, woman to serve as prime minister. Margaret Thatcher (1979–1990) and Theresa May (2016–2019) preceded her.
After her win over Rishi Sunak, Truss issued the following statement: “I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential.”

According to one source who spoke last week, “the decision was made for the audiences to take place at Balmoral to provide certainty for the new prime minister and Johnson’s schedules. The Queen has been experiencing episodic mobility issues, and they wanted to avoid the issue of alternative arrangements at the last minute had the plan been for the monarch to travel to London or Windsor Castle.”
The only other time that the queen did not first meet with a PM at Windsor Castle occurred in 1952. In that instance she met her first prime minister, Sir Winston Churchill, after disembarking from a plane which brought her from Kenya to Britain in 1952.
