Royal Family News: Queen Elizabeth Opens Parliament With The Consort Throne Conspicuously Absent

British royal family news reveals that Queen Elizabeth reached a milestone moment today at the State Opening of Parliament ceremony. It represented her first major public duty following the death of her 99-year old husband Prince Philip in April and as such the consort’s throne was absent for the first time in 120 years.

The 95-year-old monarch did not wear a face mask at the ceremony as the other participants did, and she did not wear the two-pound Imperial State crown or ceremonial robes.

The Crown Jewels weigh two pounds and eight ounces and are now too cumbersome for the 95-year-old Queen to wear.

The event itself was restricted due to COVID protocol resulting in a smaller and socially distanced event at the House of Lords. There she announced Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s legislative agenda and was accompanied by her son Prince Charles.

The consort’s throne was installed in 1901 for Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII. The throne is now being kept at the office of the Lord Great Chamberlain until it will be used again.

In the past, Charles Prince of Wales has also sat on the consort’s throne but today he and his wife Camilla sat to the side on chairs of state.

Charles’s presence at her side is now expected at future royal events.

The Queen was accompanied by a lady-in-waiting and wore what royal officials described as ‘day dress’ meaning a coat and hat in place of her ceremonial robes and crown and traveled by car, not coach from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster.

This year the monarch’s Imperial State Crown was sent separately and placed on a table in the House of Lords prior to the queen’s keynote speech which outlined the government’s plans for the year. The crown has traveled separately before.
