The now and future kings made sure to place the tree in one of her favorite places, Sandringham, where the clan gathered for its annual Christmas celebration.

The Queen’s Green Canopy scheme began as an event during her Platinum Jubilee in October 2021, it was then extended as a memorial project following her death on September 8, 2022.

The Green Canopy project launched when Charles and his mother planted a copper beech tree at her Balmoral estate. Since then celebs and citizens alike have enthusiastically planted trees to honor the project. With assorted organizations, and celebrities like Sir David Attenborough participating, the goal of 3 million trees planted has been reached.

Charles commemorated the historic moment in a written statement: “It is hard to believe that two years have passed since my mother and I planted a tree in Windsor Great Park to mark the commencement of The Queen’s Green Canopy.

As the second planting season draws to a close, and with it, this vitally important initiative, I particularly wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone from across the United Kingdom who has helped to plant over three million trees to create an enduring legacy in Queen Elizabeth’s name.”

William and Kate Middleton also contributed to the project with the couple rooting a tree in Wales in March 2022 and last December Kate also planted a cherry tree in Dean’s Yard at Westminster Abbey right before her Christmas concert.

There is still time to honor the late queen as three legacy projects will carry on the spirit of this project. One is Coronation Trees, which will see a tree planted in each UK region with a royal representative. Second is the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards, which will see young people plant trees with help from volunteers and the last is the giving of funds, from the Queen’s Green Canopy book, to various charities.
