Over the years secrets about 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth’s diet has come to the fore. For example, she forbids garlic being served at her meals! What other juicy tidbits are there? When it comes to her after-hours snacking, we have the inside scoop.

What Does Queen Elizabeth Eat Late At Night?

Have you ever had the midnight munchies? Of course you have, everyone does—but do you know what the queen does when she wants some snacks after hours?

Former Royal Chef Darren McGrady has spilled about the lavish feasts he has prepared over the years for the queen and her guests. As you would imagine her holiday meals are to die for. And McGrady has also spilled that he made Princes William and Harry special chocolate Easter eggs each year. Darren worked for the queen for 11 years including at London’s Buckingham Palace, and Balmoral.

But according to the chef, after dinner is served, neither Her Majesty, nor any other royals would ask him, “to make them meals late at night.” That’s because, “they had their very own secret stash to satiate their appetite in their rooms.”

McGrady told coffee purveyor, Coffee Friend: “We never did any late orders at all.”

A Former Chef Spills All

He added, “At Buckingham Palace I lived above the kitchen in the chef quarters and nobody ever came and knocked on the door and said, ‘the Queen wants a club sandwich.’”

“In her room was a bowl of fruit, chocolates and some of her favourites, if she wanted a nibble in the night she’d have one of those.”

Surprisingly, McGrady dishes that, “Prince William and Prince Harry … were not allowed to ‘summon the chef’ whenever they wanted.” It does seem a waste to have a personal chef in the house and not be able to order up fries at midnight?

The Queen Enjoys Tea

And how does the queen take her tea? Darren said, “Hot tea has to be hot. Tea has to be absolute boiling water poured over the top of it, it has to steep for five minutes, that is the most important part. It’s really, really important when making tea is that it’s made in a teapot – that is a real cup of tea.” Perish the thought of heating a mug of water in the microwave!
