Royal Family News – Queen Elizabeth Was Married For 73 Years
The young princess wore Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara, which originally was a necklace until she asked royal jewelers to adapt the piece into a kokoshnik-style tiara based on Russian headdresses.
Thus the Fringe Tiara was born, resplendent with 47 graduated brilliant and rose-cut diamonds, plus and 46 skinny jewels that could be removed from the tiara frame and worn as a necklace.
Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara was originally owned by Elizabeth’s grandmother, Queen Mary who passed it on to Elizabeth’s mother, the Queen Mother.

But on the big day, Queen Elizabeth had a wardrobe malfunction which she spilled about to Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. The occasion was the 2018 viewing of the exhibition that displayed Kate’s 2011 wedding dress.
On her wedding day the queen accidentally broke the tiara by touching the clasp: “The catch, which I didn’t know existed, it suddenly went … We stuck it all together again, but I was rather alarmed.”
The Queen Mother reportedly said, “We have two hours and there are other tiaras.” But Elizabeth wanted to wear only this tiara!

Wouldn’t you know it, the royal jewelers, Garrard, were on hand and saved the day. They took the piece via police escort to a workshop and came back in the nick of time. According to the queen, “I think he taped up the spring,” and the tiara is still a part of the queen’s collection.
Elizabeth rarely wears a tiara these days but for fancy schmancy events she can be seen with a brilliant tiara atop her head.
More recently the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara was loaned to Her Majesty’s only daughter, Princess Anne, who wore it on her wedding day in 1973.
And in July 2020 the queen’s granddaughter, Princess Beatrice, wore the tiara at her wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
