Roxy is a five-year-old Staffie and she was rescued by the RSPCA in Somerset in 2017. From there, her future has been bright as she has been tasked with not only protecting the Royal family but also responding to bomb threats.
Roxy Is A Royal Guard Dog
Roxy has the distinction of being the only one of her breed to work in the UK as an explosives dog. She is also the only Staffie working within the Hampshire and Thames Valley dog unit.
Among her royal assignments so far has been standing guard at Windsor Castle for Princess Beatrice’s wedding and she also monitored the landscape ahead of Prince Philip’s funeral.
Staff at the RSPCA’s West Hatch Animal Centre have spent years working with law enforcement to identify rescue dogs who could be used by the police. Once they saw Roxy they knew she was a superstar!

PC Camilla Carter is Roxy’s handler and she has nothing but high praise for her partner who she says was born to do this kind of work. She said, “Roxy is a superstar. She is intelligent, very systematic, and thorough. For her, it’s all a big, fun game and she just loves to work. To see her working and know she’s a rescue dog whose life could have been so much different makes me so proud; it’s amazing to see her doing her job and loving it.”
She added, “And I love working by her side, she’s my crewmate and we have each other’s backs.”
Roxy is one of several dozen rescue dogs who work as sniffer dogs in police forces across England and Wales.
Together Roxy and Carter search locations including private jets for suspicious packages, monitor venues ahead of Royal and Ministerial visits and respond to bomb threats. Roxy is trained to detect the scent of explosives.

The Royal Family Is Well Protected
Roxy’s supervisor Sue Dicks added that “Roxy was the right age, was good around people and other dogs, and was really confident. She was also very ball-focused, something that’s really important in training, and was incredibly determined.”
Carter noted, “Last summer, Roxy and I worked at Windsor Castle ahead of the private wedding of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and, this month, we secured the local area ahead of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.”
