Royal Family News: Scottish Actor Alan Cummings Returns His OBE Because Of ‘Toxicity’ Reasons

It’s not very often that you hear about someone returning their OBE, but there’s a first time for everything, right? British Royal Family News says that Hollywood actor Alan Cummings has decided to give back his OBE simply because he doesn’t want to be associated with the monarchy and their “toxicity” in their empire anymore. Here’s what you need to know.

Scottish Actor Alan Cummings Returns His OBE Because Of ‘Toxicity’ Reasons

Reports say that Alan Cummings has decided that he no longer wants to be an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire anymore. He even marked his 58th birthday with a message on Instagram in which he announced that he finally did something for himself. He wrote, “I returned my OBE.”

As many fans can recall, Alan was given his OBE back in 2009 by Queen Elizabeth for his work as an actor and for his campaign for LGBTQ+ rights. He also wrote, “Also, thankfully, times and laws in the US have changed, and the great good the award brought to the LGBTQ+ cause back in 2009 is now less potent than the misgivings I have being associated with the toxicity of empire (OBE stands for Officer of the British Empire). So I returned my award, explained my reasons and reiterated my great gratitude for being given it in the first place. I’m now back to being plain old Alan Cumming again. Happy birthday to me!”

Many critics commented on the matter with, “Well, if he’s so dedicated to anti-imperialism he really should renounce his U.S. citizenship as well. The U.S. is one of the strongest, if not the strongest, imperialist force in modern times. Then I’ll believe he’s doing it out of principle. Otherwise, it’s just a publicity stunt. Bet he doesn’t do that,” along with, “

There are also UK celebs who are open about why they accept or turn down these honors from the gate. Armando Iannucci for example is not a monarchist, but said he did it for his parents. They’re immigrants and it meant a lot to them their son did so well. If you don’t understand why you’re accepting a gift, honor, whatever – maybe just turn it down from the get-go. Just pick a lane and stick with it.”
