Gardner and Kate were connected by the Royal Voluntary Service, and his first question was, what should he call Kate? The down to earth royal said, “Call me Catherine,” he told The Sun, remarking that Kate made him feel at ease instantaneously.
“After the first two sentences I didn’t feel like I was talking to someone so important,” he said, but prior to that he said he was “flabbergasted” to learn Kate would be on the other end of call. He noted that their first conversation was in May 2020 and lasted about half an hour. The two bonded over their love of Italian food and during their first talk Kate told him that she was watching her kids Prince George and Princess Charlotte play outside. Shortly after the call, Kate sent her phone buddy a brand new pasta machine and flour.
He said, “I can tell you, this lady you see on television that goes into the crowds and talks to people — what you see is what you get,” he said. “She is a very, very nice person.”
