Royal Family News: Sophie Wessex Insulted The Queen And Had To Apologize?

Sophie The Countess Of WessexBritish royal family news reveals that Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, has been hailed as one of the monarchy’s shining stars, even as it is mired in scandal. So it may come as a surprise to learn that she once had a scandal of her own attached to her name. Let’s unpack what that was all about and how in the end she was exonerated.

Sophie Had A Scandal?

It happened back in 2001 when Mazher Mahmood, then an editor at The News of the World, hid his identity and pretended to be, “a fake sheikh to record their conversation,” according to My London.

At the time Sophie and her husband, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, where on a tour of the Gulf. She spoke to Mazher, “who was undercover,” and “allegedly recorded the entire conversation in secret, in which she made several digs at the Royal Family and the government.”

Sophie Wessex Was A Target

In the end The News of the World did not publish the information obtained by Mazher. But, and this is a big but, The Mail on Sunday and Sunday Mirror did. The articles claimed that Sophie referred to the Queen as the, “old dear,” criticized then prime minister Tony Blair’s leadership style as, “too presidential,” and called his wife Cherie Blair, “absolutely horrid, horrid, horrid.” Oh my.

It gets worse—or better depending on your point of view. According to the articles, “she also supposedly said Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles would marry – which was extremely controversial at the time.” The couple did say I do in 2005, but only after his first wife slammed Camilla as a home wrecker.

What Was Sophie Thinking?

Apparently Sophie was not done. “She supposedly mocked the appearance of the leader of the opposition, William Hague, as well as his Yorkshire accent. She also allegedly made further comments about Tony Blair’s wife, saying she ‘hates’ the countryside and continued to work as a barrister only to ‘keep her hand in.’”

After publication both papers claimed she apologized to Blair, Hague and the Prince of Wales, and Buckingham Palace issued a statement claiming that, “not one of the quotes” was accurate. Does that mean they all were?

The statement also said: “A member of the Royal Family such as the Countess of Wessex who is trying to pursue her own career is obviously vulnerable to set-ups such as this.” Since then it has been onward and upward for Sophie who is now considered a valuable asset to the monarchy.
