Royal Family News: The Queen Will Not Attend This Event, First Time In 70 Years

The QueenBritish royal family news reveals that Queen Elizabeth has just cancelled her appearance at another momentous event, she will not attend the annual Maundy Day church service. Buckingham Palace has announced that the 95-year old monarch will be represented by Prince Charles at the April 14 event.

The queen has never missed the service in her 70-year-to-date reign but she has been dealing with health and mobility issues in recent months. In her place will be Charles, the heir to the throne and his wife Camilla.

Royal Family News – The Queen Cancels Another Service

The ceremony is held on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. It celebrates citizens who have contributed to their local church or community and was not held for the past two years due to the Covid pandemic. During the event guests are given ceremonial silver coins, known as ‘Maundy Money’ as a thank you for their service.

The Palace issued this statement in regard to the Queen’s absence: “Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will represent Her Majesty The Queen at the Royal Maundy Service at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on Thursday 14th April.”

Royal Family News – Charles Steps Up For The Queen

The statement continues: “The Prince and The Duchess will be met by the Dean of Windsor, The Right Reverend David Conner KCVO and the Lord High Almoner, the Right Reverend Dr. John Inge. Their Royal Highnesses will be presented with nosegays at the start of the service, during which The Prince of Wales will distribute the Maundy money.”

In addition the palace stated, “Following the service, The Prince and The Duchess will proceed to the West Steps where an official photograph will be taken of Their Royal Highnesses and the Royal Maundy party.”

Royal Family News – Is The Queen Well?

Last week the queen was present at a memorial service for her late husband Prince Philip who died at the age of 99 last April. At that time the service was limited to 30 individuals due to Covid restrictions, and his memorial saw 1,800 guests in attendance. She was escorted to her seat by son Prince Andrew who many thought should not have been front and center due to recent scandal.
