The event is a sacred and special one for Queen Elizabeth. She was recently told to disengage from public duties for two weeks after a health scare. This caused her to miss two significant public events. But her aides have made it clear that she will be in attendance at Remembrance Sunday.

The 95-year-old monarch was hospitalized overnight recently with an undisclosed condition. Following her discharge she has been confined to light desk duties although she did travel to Sandringham for a long weekend stay.

Royal Family News – The Queen is 95-Years Old

Remembrance Sunday is also known as The National Service of Remembrance. The day represents the end point of a four-day reflection period when the royal family and the British public gather to remember fallen soldiers from World War I.

Royal watcher Laura Clouting told People that the royal family are, “completely embedded,” in rituals, and Remembrance Sunday is one of the biggest.

In regard to Remembrance Sunday, Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather, King George V, laid the Unknown Warrior to rest in Westminster Abbey on November 11, 1920 and he unveiled The Cenotaph war memorial in Whitehall later that day.

Royal Family News – The Queen Always Lays a Wreath

According to Clouting, “The Queen still lays a wreath every year — albeit through Prince Charles these days. There is a very special, intimate connection with the military.” Charles has been laying the queen’s wreath at The Cenotaph since 2017.

The only other senior royals to now lay wreaths at the monument are Prince William, Princess Anne and Prince Edward.

During the Remembrance Sunday service the Queen typically wears five poppies on her black coat. In recent years she stands on a balcony overlooking The Cenotaph, and Kate Middleton and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall stand near her.

This display from the Royal Family, “is showing gratitude for the loss of life basically occurring in their name — certainly in the name of the Sovereign as the head of state,” says Clouting. “Remembrance is very, very personal for them.”

Red poppies became a symbol of remembrance after WWI. The queen’s five small red flowers represent each of the services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Civil Defence), and the fifth one represents women.
