Just what constitutes a “royal family?” The appellation describes the immediate family of a monarch who heads up a nation under a monarchy government. Thus, monarchy countries have royal families.

Not always, but typically, a royal family includes the ruling monarch, their spouse, their children and grandchildren, parents, their siblings, and their paternal cousins.

The spouses of immediate family members are included in the royal family by default and in some cases, aunts, uncles, great-grandchildren, and other descendants may also be considered to be a part of the royal family.

Which royal family has the largest kingdom? That would be Queen Elizabeth and her family. But the queen is the leader of more than just the United Kingdom. The British monarch rules over 15 other countries, including Canada, the Bahamas, and Australia.

Overall there are more than two dozen (26) monarchies around the world. Of these 12 are in Europe and 10 of those 12 are led by a royal family. This includes the Windsors in the United Kingdom and the Grimaldi’s in Monaco.
But lesser known monarchies exist in Africa and Asia as well.
