Royal expert Ingrid Seward wrote the book, “My Husband and I: The Inside Story of the Royal Marriage” about queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. According to her he was treated as an “outsider” and “patronized” when he married then-Princess Elizabeth.

In the book Lord Brabourne, a relative of Philips, said, “Life at court was very frustrating for him at first. It was very stuffy.”

Apparently courtiers did not take to Philip from the very beginning in part because he was born in Greece and therefore foreign, Seward wrote.

She wrote, “Tommy Lascelles (private secretary to the King) was impossible. They were bloody to him. They patronized him. They treated him as an outsider. It wasn’t much fun.”

“He laughed it off, of course, but it must have hurt. I’m not sure Princess Elizabeth noticed it. She probably didn’t see it.”

The queen is said to have fallen in love with Philip as a teen and the pair wed in 1947. Back in that era palace aides and senior members of the royal household had tremendous influence and power.

Philip’s cousin Lady Pamela Hicks said in Seward’s book that palace advisers thought Philip was, “abrasive and rude. He knew he was going into the lions’ den. He was very conscious of the way he’d been treated and how hard he would have to fight for his position and his independence (against the Establishment). What he didn’t know was just how fearsome it was going to be.”

Elizabeth became the sovereign ruler at age 25 following her father’s sudden and unexpectedly death in 1952. In turn Philip had to give up his naval career and adapt to palace life.

His former private secretary Mike Parker told the Express newspaper, “Philip was constantly being squashed, snubbed, ticked off, rapped over the knuckles. It was intolerable. The problem was simply that Philip had energy, ideas, get-up-and-go, and that didn’t suit the Establishment, not one bit.”

That sounds an awful lot like Meghan Markle’s self-reported story. The difference is that Philip gracefully went about his business while the former starlet threw the entire royal family under the bus in an Oprah Winfrey cryfest.

Royal expert Camilla Tominey told The New Yorker, “I’ve put it down to a clash of cultures, in the sense that she had come from a celebrity world, which is very fast-paced and quite demanding. The royal world is very different – it’s must slower-paced and hugely hierarchical.”
