Royal Family News – When is Queen Elizabeth State Funeral?
The funeral for Queen Elizabeth, the nation’s longest serving monarch, is expected to take place around 10 days after the announcement of her death, following an official mourning period.
It will be at London’s Westminster Abbey, on Monday, Sept. 19. Buckingham Palace has confirmed the date, and the British government has declared a period of national mourning that extends until the end of that day.
According to the Washington Post, “King Charles III, the queen’s eldest son, who has now ascended to the throne, will go on a tour of the United Kingdom, probably starting in Scotland, ahead of the funeral.”
Where Will the Queen be Buried?
Before her funeral and burial, the queen’s, “last ceremonial journey will take her from Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she died, to her resting place in Windsor. There will be many stops on the way, according to plans that have long been in place, although the exact details could change.”
Royal Family News – The Queen’s Final Journey
The queen’s coffin will travel from Balmoral Castle, the royal estate in the Scottish highlands, to the 16th-century Holyrood Palace in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. From there the coffin will travel in a procession to St. Giles’ Cathedral.
Next, the queen’s body will be flown to London. Once there, there will be a procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall. At that time there will be a military parade and Her Majesty will lie in state for several days. During this time the, “public will be able to visit as she lies on a raised platform known as a catafalque.”
“After the funeral, the coffin will go to Windsor Castle, just outside of London, and she will be buried next to her husband, Prince Philip, at St. George’s Chapel.”
