Yet, one royal expert claims that his first love was Lucia Santa Cruz, the daughter of the then-Chilean ambassador.

According to Lady Elizabeth Anson, a cousin of Charles and a friend of Lucia’s, “She was the first real love of his life.”
The two met when Charles was studying at Trinity College. Lucia had it all, beauty, brains and wit. She was a professional linguist who spoke four languages and had several degrees including one from Oxford.

They met at a dinner party in 1969 and reportedly it was love at first sight. There are few photos of them together but there is one in which they are together in a car, circa 1971.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Charles Prince of Wales took Lucia home to meet his family and although the relationship did not last long, she played a crucial role in his future.
In 1971 Lucia became friendly with one of her London apartment neighbors, a lady by the name of Camilla Shand. Yes, that Camilla! Lucia introduced Charles and Camilla and as they say, the rest is history.

It was reported that Charles was a shy and socially awkward youth, but his relationship with Lucia progressed and according to royal biographer Tina Brown, Lucia was given a key to the Master’s Lodge so the couple could have private time together.
In his authorized biography of the Prince of Wales, author Jonathan Dimbleby says Lucia told Charles she had “just the girl” for him.
It was then that he met Camilla and almost immediately, Charles was bit by the love bug and, “he lost his heart to her almost at once.”
These days Charles and Camilla are set to become king and queen of England; they have come a long way since their awkward youthful days. In fact, their latest headline was all about them getting the coronavirus inoculation!
