Royal Family News – Poppy Pins Everywhere!

Royal Family news reveals that, according to PEOPLE, The Firm is adding something new to their attire this month – a small lapel pin in the form of a red flower resembling a poppy. Royal fans who’ve been watching might have noticed that some members of the Royal Family have been sporting little red poppy pins with their outfits recently.

For example, Prince William and Kate Middleton were both wearing the poppies during their visit to Scarborough on November 3. We noticed that Prince William also added the pin to his tuxedo at the 10th annual Tusk Conservation Awards as well as on his suit for the Film Africa festival earlier in the week.

Princess Royal, King Charles III, and Queen Consort Camilla also all wore the pins as they welcomed Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games athletes to a reception at Buckingham Palace.

In Flanders Fields the Poppies Blow

Every November, these little red poppy pins become part of the royal wardrobe. The poppy has been used traditionally since 1921 to honor service members who have died on the battlefield. The poppy is mostly associated with Remembrance Day on November 11 for the UK and other Commonwealth countries.

It is thought that the poppy, as a symbol, may have been taken from a poem by John McCrae about World War II, “In Flanders Field” (via Vogue). The opening verse reads reverently:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

The pins are sold in the UK by the Royal British Legion in order to raise money for veterans.

The History Of The Remembrance Poppy

The symbol is also sometimes used in the US but not as often. The American Legion Auxiliary distributes paper poppies, given out with donations, around Memorial Day as well as Veterans Day. It was first widely used in the US when the Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted the first nationwide distribution of poppies before Memorial Day in 1922.

This month members of the monarchy will take part in a number of events that honor military personnel leading up to the National Service of Remembrance, otherwise known as Remembrance Sunday. There they will gather at The Cenotaph war memorial in London for Sunday Service.
