Royal Family News – Prince William Could Leapfrog Prince Charles?

According to royal expert Tina Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair, Charles is “desperate” to be king and will never “consider abdicating” in favor of Prince William. She dissects this and other royal issues in her new book The Palace Papers which is causing a stir with its tart tone and inside analysis.

Brown compared Charles with the son of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, in terms of public sentiment about him as a ruler. He would follow in the footsteps of a hugely popular monarch and Brown told The New York Times’ Sway podcast of Edward, “He was a kind of shock absorber for the next reign. And I kind of think that’s what will happen in Charles. A lot of people are very pessimistic about Charles taking over. I actually am not one of those.”

Brown was asked why Charles’ popularity is so much lower than the queen’s, and she responded with her typical sharp wit: “Because we know too much about Charles. He has always been something of an Eeyore feeling. One of his favorite mottos is, oh, just my luck. You know?”

She added, “However, I actually think he’ll surprise people. I think he will.”

Brown was also asked if she thinks that Charles would abdicate and give the throne to William when the time comes to do so. “Why anybody thinks that, I mean, Charles is so desperate for this freaking job. I mean, you know, he’s waited 50 years for this. I mean, there’s just no way.” And she’s probably right.
