Royals News: Anti-Royal Petition Fails, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Keep Royal Titles

Last week, it was reported that an anti-royal petition was signed by 3,800 people. It was demanding that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle be stripped of their royal titles. The motion has been rejected. The council does not have the authority to take the titles away as they were given out by the Queen herself.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were given their royal titles by the Queen following their marriage last year.

Charles Ross, an anti-monarchist campaigner began the petition. His claim is that Harry and Meghan having royal titles is “morally wrong” and disrespectful. Ross also stated that it was “non-democratic” as well as a “symbol of oppression by the wealthy elite.”

The petition ended up gaining 3,800 signatures and was brought before the council for a decision on the matter. However, the motion was denied. Not only did the council explain they have no authority to strip royal duties that were issued by the Queen, they found the petition to be utterly disrespectful to the Royal Family.

Council Members Explain Decision

Speaking of the decision, council leader Nancy Platts said she understands each side had passionate views on the subject of the petition. However, local authorities do not have the power to remove titles. Platts explained that it is a matter for the Crown. It was added that the council’s time is better spent on issues that are important to the local residents.

Defending Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Royal Titles

According to a report published by Mirror Online, Thomas Mace-Archer-Mills, founder of the British Monarchists Society released a statement on the petition.

“We are utterly dismayed that said petition has been signed by so many… Such a petition shows utter disdain and contempt for The Crown, not to mention copious amounts of disrespect to, and for, the Royal family .”
