British royal family news divulges that not all Brits are royalists. Some celebs are decidedly not fond of the royal family, and some of the names may surprise you.
We got a taste of republican sentiment during the coronation of King Charles in 2023 when signs reading “not my king” were dotted about the landscape.
Here we give you an in-depth look at some of the big names who eschew the monarchy. Off with their heads?!
Royal Family News – Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe made his name portraying a proper British character developed by a famous British author: Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling.
In 2009 he told The Daily Beast “I am not a royalist. Not at all. I am definitely a republican in the British sense of the word. I’m proud proud proud of being English, but I think the monarchy symbolizes a lot of what was wrong with the country.”
Lest he be misunderstood, Radcliffe added that he has “nothing against the royals as people.” He tried to bolster his opinion by opining that “What role, if any, the British monarchy plays in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world has never been established.” Sniff, sniff, stiff upper lip?
Royal Family News – Ian McKellen
Ian McKellen is another British actor who got his bag playing a character written by one of the UK’s most famous writers, J. R. R. Tolkien.
Yet he, too, has no stomach for the monarchy–despite happily accepting a knighthood from the late Queen Elizabeth.
McKellen transcended his theater background by playing Gandalf the Grey in “The Lord of the Rings.” McKellen told The Telegraph in 2024 that the beloved monarch was “dismissive” of him.
When she asked him “Does anyone still actually go to the theater?” McKellen was steamed. He called her “bloody rude” and had the audacity to claim she had gone “quite mad” at the end of her life.
Adding insult to injury, McKellen “expressed sympathy” for Prince Harry but concluded that the traitor was “probably not bright enough … to really help himself.”
Royal Family News – Colin Firth
Colin Firth won an Oscar for his portrayal of King George VI in “The King’s Speech.” But he told CNN that he was not comfortable with “unelected bodies” and that voting was one of his “favorite things.” This was enough for many fans to label him a republican, and he’s never disagreed with that.
At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinion, and as Shakespeare said “to thine own self be true.”
