Sweetest Moment of the Royal Tour: Meghan Markle Comforts Sobbing Fan

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived in New Zealand on Sunday, October 28. They took a three-hour flight from Sidney, Australia to kick off the final stop of their 16-day royal tour. When they arrived in New Zealand, the crowd were waiting for them and they were thrilled to see the newlyweds.

The royal couple visited the Pukeahu National War Memorial to pay their respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. The Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is a symbol of remembrance for those soldiers who do not return home after serving in the military. One particular teenage fan caught Meghan’s attention as she busted into tears as she and Prince Harry approached her.

Meghan grabbed her hands and comforted her as the teen cried. She was clearly overwhelmed by the Duchess. Markle spent a few minutes talking to the teen. The media dubbed this moment as the sweetest moment in the 16-day tour.

“Absolute hysteria here in #Wellington including a sobbing fan who was comforted by the Duchess herself!” tweeted royals reporter Natalie Oliveri. “Meghan spent quite a while talking to the crying teen — one of the sweetest moments on the #royaltour so far!”

Just a few days ago in Melbourne, a fan broke down in happy tears when Prince Harry pulled her in for a hug. The 19-year-old India Brown told People that Prince Harry hugged her. It meant a lot to her as she has loved the royal family since she was a little girl. She said she didn’t expect him to embrace her because it is against protocol but it is an experience she will never forget.

“I said ‘I know it’s against royal protocol but can I please have a hug?’” Brown recalled asking Harry. “He hugged me and I burst into tears. He just said ‘Oh you’re going to get me in trouble.’”

The royal couple attended a reception hosted by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Governor Dame Patsy Reddy at the Government House in Wellington.
