British royal family news divulges that today, Nov. 16, 2010, marks the 14th anniversary of Prince William and Princess Catherine’s engagement announcement and interview. They married on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey and are raising three beautiful children together.
During the interview Kate wore the gorgeous sapphire and diamond engagement ring that King Charles gave to William’s mother, the late Diana.
The world was instantly enchanted with the future queen and king and here are some of their most memorable statements from their engagement interview.
Royal Family News – Kate’s Fairytale
William told the interviewer: “We had a little private time away together with some friends, and I just decided that it was the right time, really. We had been talking about marriage for a while so it wasn’t a massively big surprise. I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya and I proposed.”
He added that Africa “was beautiful at the time. I had done a little bit of planning to show my romantic side.”
Royal Family News – William Proposed in Africa
William also spoke of his mother’s engagement ring saying that he had been toting it around in his backpack for weeks!
“Everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it, because I knew this thing, if it disappeared, I would be in a lot of trouble. And because I’d planned it, it went fine. You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things going horribly wrong — it went really, really well, and I was really pleased when she said yes.” Making the moment even more charming, Kate had no idea what William was up to!
Kate Middleton Is A Future Queen
Kate said of the proposal that she “really didn’t expect it at all. I thought he might have maybe thought about it but … It was a total shock when it came, and [I was] very excited.” Kate confirmed that William’s proposal “was very romantic … There’s a true romantic in there.” Aw!
Royal Family News – William Is A Romantic
Seeing Diana’s ring on Kate’s finger was the first time the public had seen the iconic jewel since Diana’s 1997 death.
William explained: “It is a family ring, yes. It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so I thought it was quite nice because obviously she’s not going to be around to share any of the fun and excitement of it all. This was my way of keeping her close to it all.”
Kate said that she would have loved to have met Diana, but William said that there was no pressure for Kate to be “the next Diana.”
William’s Romantic Proposal
Despite William being a dyed in the wool romantic, he deviated from the script by not asking Kate’s dad Michael Middleton for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
During the interview, William explained his reasoning: “So I thought if I ask Kate first, then he can’t really say no. So I did it that way ‘round. I managed to speak to Mike soon after it happened really, and then it sort of happened from there.”
During the interview Kate said “I hope we will be able to have a happy family ourselves” and William recalled “When I first met Kate, I knew there was something very special about her.”
Kate went on to say that learning the ins and outs of being royal was “nerve-wracking” but that she hoped “I can make a difference, even in the smallest way. I am looking forward to helping as much as I can.”
It’s safe to say that Kate has been a welcome and endearing addition to the royal family, and the couple’s fairy tale includes three children, one of whom will follow in his father’s regal footsteps.
ll in all William and Kate have brought love, charisma, and respect to the monarchy for the last 14 years and we look forward to many more years of happiness for the Wales family.
