Kate Middleton Heartbreaker
The royal pundit claims that his “heart sank” after Kensington Palace announced that there would no longer be briefings on Princess Catherine’s wardrobe choices.
Part of the reason is the wish to focus on the “substance” of her royal work, despite selling out designs as fast as they are announced.
It’s hard to think of a more popular fashion icon in the UK quite that Kate, but nonetheless, Kensington Palace has issued its decree.
The change isn’t entirely new, as the palace said similar things in the past. The hope is that coverage of the future Queen centers on her charitable work and less on her looks.

Newsweek’s royal expert Jack Royston said “Well my heart sunk a little bit when I say this.” He noted that tensions had been running high between the palace and the media over this point of contention.
The expert noted that “we all like to talk about the fashion because the fashion is fantastic, and it makes the royals fun, it makes them entertaining and it makes them uplifting to people because the news is very heavy, it’s very doom and gloom.” This past year was especially dreary with both Catherine and King Charles diagnosed with cancer.
Royal Fans Want Levity
Royston said that the “royals have all these wonderful interactions with people they meet, they love the people that they interact with, and they want us to focus on that. I think it’s a big mistake.”
He went on to explain that he thinks that addressing fashion fun is a good way to stoke public interest in the monarchy.

He said “Never resent the love that people give you. Who is going to look back on Princess Diana’s career and think ‘Gosh didn’t we spend too much time talking about her fashion?'” He does have a point, people still talk about Daina’s fashion sense today.
The Late Diana Was Stylish
He went on to note that “Fashion is a form of self-expression; it’s a form of art, but it’s one we all practice…it’s a really important part of the way we interact with the world.”
But the palace advised that Kate was frustrated that her clothes sometimes gained more coverage than her good deeds.
A Kensington Palace aide stated “There is an absolute feeling that it is not about what the princess is wearing. She wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting.”
“There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No. The style is there but it’s about the substance.”
