Most royal experts seem to agree that the monarchy will survive, so long as it keeps pace with the times. Smith said, “We’re not expecting the monarchy to be abolished whilst the queen is on the throne,” but he does want the UK to have an elected, non-partisan president as head of state.

He told AFP, “This is the last monarch who is going to have anything like the sort of popular support the queen has.”

Most experts agree that the queen’s popularity will not be surpassed, at least not by her immediate heir, her eldest son Prince Charles. Once he is installed, Smith thinks, “then yes, we can certainly achieve that goal and get rid of the monarchy.”
