She will be queen one day, when her husband William, Prince of Wales takes the throne following the death of his father and the current regent, King Charles.

It seems as if there is nothing Kate Middleton can’t accomplish, but there is one hurdle she had to overcome on her way to the throne. Keep reading to discover how the late Queen Elizabeth, arguably the most beloved royal (in any country) of all time chose not to honor Kate.

Royal Family News: Prince William Is Married to Princess Catherine

According to a prior article in The Telegraph, Prince William “wants to continue to be known as that. He wants Kate to become Princess Catherine.” But that was not a given, as royal expert Kenneth Rose said at the time: “Kate is a commoner and could not be known as ‘Princess Catherine.'”

Today Catherine is known as the Princess of Wales, but “Her Majesty … didn’t make Kate a titled princess upon her marriage to William.”

Instead, Prince William and Kate Middleton were styled as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge upon their marriage; another option would have been for her to be titled “Princess William.”

Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022 upon which time, according to custom, her eldest son and heir King Charles ascended the throne.

At that time William and Kate became the Prince and Princess of Wales as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. Prior to this Charles was styled the Prince of Wales, although his second wife Camilla did not take that title given that the late Diana, Charles’ first wife, used the moniker.

When Kate was given the Princess of Wales title a source told the Daily Mail that she “appreciates the history associated with this role but will understandably want to look to the future as she creates her own path.”

“The couple are focused on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time. The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the modest and humble way they’ve approached their work previously.”

This year, King Charles, who was diagnosed with cancer at the same time as Kate, bestowed a new title on his daughter-in-law: Royal Companion of The Order of the Companions of Honour.

For once and for all, the Monarchy is not Disneyland. One does not dish out titles at whim but it’s written in stone exactly how titles come to be. To be a “Princess” in one’s own right, one has to be born of the Monarch or a senior member of the Monarch’s family. Eg: Princess Anne the Princess Royal ( her brothers were Princes) Princess Charlotte, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Lady Louise, daughter of Prince Edward Duke of Edinburgh has not taken up the title but it’s there if she wishes to. Diana became HRH Princess of Wales straight after her marriage due to Princes Charles’s title Prince of Wales. She was never Princess Diana ( fabricated by the press). Catherine’s title on marriage was HRH Catherine Duchess of Cambridge. Her lesser title is Princess William of Wales. Since Charles became King, Prince of Wales title went to his eldest son, Prince William, making William’s wife HRH Catherine Princess of Wales. Never Princess Catherine and I wish they forget the Kate Middleton moniker as she’s been married for over 10 years! So the tripe written above is just someone who knows diddly squat about titles etc.
