She lay in state for almost a week, with a crowd of over 250,000 people said to have queued up to be able to pay their final respects before her burial on Monday, September 19.
Flags Return To Full Mast After Britain Mourned the Queen For Ten Days
As the longest reigning monarch in British history, she was truly honored by the people and her funeral service was reportedly watched by millions in the UK alone.
Traditionally, the Queen’s death would have triggered a twelve-day mourning period, but King Charles the III requested that the number be extended until 7 days after Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on 19 September 2022.
“Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, it is His Majesty’s wish that a period of Royal Mourning be observed from now until seven days after The Queen’s Funeral,” the statement – which was shared to social media – read.
“Royal Mourning will will be observed by Members of the Royal Family, Royal Household staff and Representative of the Royal Household on official duties, together with troops committed to ceremonial duties,” the statement added.
Starting since the Queen’s death was announced, official flags across the UK were lowered at half-mast.
During the mourning period, shops were closed and certain modes of transportation were shutdown as a national holiday was declared.
Most sporting events were cancelled as people mourned the late Queen, with football clubs and stadiums paying a special tribute to Her Majesty.
The mourning period for the public officially ended immediately after the funeral on Monday, September 19.
Now, the flags have been raised to their former position at full mast and life in Britain have fairly returned to normal.
Meanwhile, members of the Royal Family and staff will remain in mourning until September 26, seven days after the funeral.
