Can the Queen Fire the Prime Minister?

Before Boris Johnson agreed to step down as the Prime Minister, his party and the entire Parliament raised up a storm, with several of Johnson’s ministers resigning from their posts. Weeks leading up to his announcement, many members of Parliament asked him to step down, with accusations of scandal plaguing him every step of the way.

But is there a scenario where the Queen, who we all know is politically neutral, can step in on behalf of her people and remove a Prime Minister that isn’t serving the people’s interests?

Her Majesty’s role when it comes to the government is mostly ceremonial, but she does wield some pretty cool powers – even though we’ve never seen her use it.

As a constitutional monarchy, the Queen’s powers are by convention. Once a person is voted in by the public in the general election, the leader of the winning party is then formally appointed by Her Majesty as Prime Minister.

At the end of a term, the Parliament is dissolved by the Queen until the general election is over. The last time this took place was in 2019 when the public voted for Boris Johnson to run the nation.

The only reason the Prime Minister will be dismissed is if the wishes of the legislature (Parliament) were hugely conflicting with those of the general public.

Queen Elizabeth Could Makes Some Massive Changes

The Queen could step in when a Prime Minister loses a vote of no confidence, but refuses to leave his office. As firing a Prime Minister without a suitable candidate ready to take his/her place is detrimental to the country, she may instead dissolve or suspend parliament.

Even though the Queen has never employed them, she does wield considerable powers over government and the Prime Minister. However, the Queen thrives in her role as the nation’s advisor, acting mostly in the interests of her people, as she has spent most of her time meeting and speaking with the common folk.
