British royal family news divulges that the late Queen Elizabeth was so fond of Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh that some claim she was the monarch’s favorite DIL.

What made Sophie so special? According to one royal expert her charm lies in being down to earth, and “because she refused to have expensive security” unlike one royal … looking at you Harry.

In fact, Sophie continues to occupy a special place in the monarchy’s collective heart as she was called the “unsung hero of Christmas” for supporting her Kate Middleton through her cancer battle.

Royal pundit Ingrid Seward told OK! that “With the exception of her daughter Anne, the Queen was closer to Sophie than any of the other royal women. It really was a genuine closeness, and Elizabeth was always Sophie’s biggest confidante.”

Sophie’s allure was in part due to her “lack of airs and graces. I think she saw Sophie as a bit of a surrogate daughter, too.” Sophie is married to Elizabeth’s youngest child, Prince Edward, and they have two children together.

Seward noted that Duchess Sophie had much in common with her mother-in-law, especially their love of military history.

She said “Sophie apparently once went to the First World War battlefields and museums of northern France, which obviously the Queen wasn’t able to do.” Instead, Sophie called her MIL from there to tell her all about the experience.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl agrees with Seward’s assessment: “Sophie had a wonderful relationship with the Queen, and she never saw it as a chore.”

She added that Sophie “was very willing to step up and provide support when needed, and she did it with quiet enthusiasm, and always with a cheerful smile. I think in return, Elizabeth learned not just to rely on Sophie, but to trust her implicitly.”

OK! reported that it was Sophie who convinced Queen Elizabeth to watch Netflix’s series on the royal family, The Crown and we can only imagine that conversation!

Nicholl thinks that the late monarch saw in Sophie “a very sensible young woman, and she was quick to welcome her into the inner circle.”

Along with not having airs “Sophie knew her place in the hierarchy of The Firm, and never caused any problems. Even in the early days, when there was a bit of drama surrounding her, the Queen stood by her.”
