Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace officially announced the separation of the households of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which will be formalized this spring.

Prince William and Kate Middleton will remain at Kensington Palace, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will move to the Frogmore Cottage outside Buckingham Palace. This separation also means they would need separate office and communications staff, which makes some wonder what would happen to their shared social media accounts.

The Cambridges and the Sussexes have been using a shared Twitter account (@KensingtonRoyal) with 1.69 million followers and Instagram account (@kensingtonroyal) with 7.1 million followers. These are regularly updated with their activities, recent photos and birthdays, as well as tributes.

Royal Family Members Do Not Use Personal Social Media Accounts

Royals don’t have their personal social media accounts, and Meghan had to close her accounts and website before getting married to Prince Harry last year.

Based on the statement released by a Buckingham Palace spokesperson to Vanity Fair, Prince Harry and Meghan’s activities will be shared on the existing @RoyalFamily handle, which has 3.88 million followers on Twitter and 4.9 million followers on Instagram.

The communications staff for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will work as part of the Buckingham Palace Communications Team, and report to the Queen’s Communications Secretary,” the statement said.

Different Responsibilities Require Different Offices And Staff

Unfortunately, Prince Harry and Meghan’s followers could only hope for now that they get to have a social media for just the two of them. But it is not impossible. Prince Andrew has his own Twitter and Instagram accounts and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are updating their followers through @Clarencehouse feeds.

Meanwhile, the separation of Prince William and Prince Harry’s offices fuel the never ending rumors of a rift between them and their wives. But according to historian Marlene Koenig, who also runs the Royal Musings blog, such separation is just normal. The princes have very different responsibilities now, so it is natural that they have different offices with different staff.

Just as Prince Charles is taking more responsibilities from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William is also absorbing more roles from his father, being the heir apparent to the throne.
