What the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Can Teach Us About Female Resilience

When the Duchess of Cornwall entered the Royal Family, we could almost say that all hell broke lose. The critics were in the thousands: people determined to hate her no matter what she does. “Home wrecker”, probably, is the most popular word used by haters to describe her.

No one can stand unbending in the face of such public disapproval, and very little can continue to care after all that, and yet Camilla continues to stand tall and proud, and above all, she continues to care.

Her years of diligent work has not been completely lost on the sane, and after so many unwarranted criticisms, she’s finally getting love from the unlikeliest of places.

A republican feminist with a strong dislike for the royal family is one of those people who now see the true woman behind the vines of hate. I think it’s time we all do too.

Feminist Julie Bindel has always hated the thought of the women who will agree to become a royal woman, thereby feeding an institution that’s been known to value men above women.

She said: “There is no life more stereotypically feminine than that of a royal wife. We all know the drill: look good (especially with tiaras), give birth to children (especially boys), and walk a step or two behind your man (especially, well, all the time actually). So how extraordinary it is to think that Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall – and the oldest royal woman in Britain – tends to undermine this Stepford trope. In fact, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Camilla could one day be called the most feminist queen we’ll ever have.”

Why does Julie think this, you may ask. It’s because the Duchess doesn’t only smile and wave, in fact, she generally avoids the fanfare of being a royal. Instead she uses her worldwide platform to combat issues that harm and scar women, from domestic violence to rape. Topics that pretty and perfect women tend to shy away from.

While the public blamed her for Charles and Diana’s sad breakup, she bore the blame silently. Instead, with every passing year, she earned her place in the hearts of people. Yes, she isn’t Diana – Diana was younger and prettier – but she’s her own person, and she’s worth loving for that.

Speaking on how the public delights in blaming women, Julie said: “And it’s also worth noting that Camilla’s popularity – which has grown year on year – is a positive step away from the tradition of blaming the woman for everything, given how vilified she was for having an affair with Charles had a relationship go wrong while married to Diana.

“It is interesting to note that even after becoming partner to Prince Charles, Camilla kept her own home, Ray Mill House, which she bought in 1996 after divorcing Andrew Parker Bowles, her first husband. Apparently it’s where she goes when she needs to get away from the royal circus.”

How Camilla Continues to Champion Females and Raise Awareness For “Taboo” Subjects

Julie Bindel also noted how the Duchess of Cornwall tackles truly important topics that haunt thousands, if not millions, of women around the world.

Julie commented on Camilla’s strength, saying: “And despite all the attacks from the often hostile and misogynist media, Camilla has always refused to be a victim; nor is there anything of the submissive woman in her.

Take a look at the causes she supports and you’ll get a deeper insight into her philosophy. Camilla is the queen who most supports women’s rights (and not just the glamorous ones) and who everyone who has ever met tells me is great fun.

“She continues to do what interests her most, which is women’s rights, including campaigning to end domestic violence, abuse and sexual assault. By openly, publicly and genuinely supporting the victims of these crimes, Camilla showcases feminism in action”
