British royal family news reveals that as the oldest child of the future king, Prince George has his work cut out for him. Literally. He will be the monarch after his father Prince William, who becomes regent following his father King Charles’ current reign.

George is on a cookie cutter path in which royal first borns are slotted into a rigid role. That role is gilded and glamorous, but it also has its drawbacks. What if Prince George takes after his black sheep uncle and goes on his own freedom flight?  Here’s what that scenario might look like.

Could Prince George Refuse The Throne?

In keeping with British tradition, the crown is worn by the oldest heir in the family. There are notable exceptions, as in the case of King Edward VIII. In 1936 he decided that life with an American divorcee sounded better than pomp and protocol and ditched the throne.

His younger brother then became King George VI and reigned until his untimely death, paving the way for his oldest child, Queen Elizabeth, to enjoy a 70-year reign.

If George refuses the crown and has no children, his sister Princess Charlotte would reign– barring any health problems or a sudden conversion to Catholicism.

If Princess Charlotte refused and she had no kids, then her younger sibling Prince Louis would be tapped to put on the big boy pants. And, perish the thought, if none of Prince William’s children want to rule, the next in line is Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Let’s not dwell on that thought.

There’s another reason why George might never rule, and it has nothing to do with his proclivities. According to royal expert Robert Hardman “The big threat to the future of the House of Windsor is not mobs storming the gate, it’s not revolution, it’s becoming irrelevant.”

Royal Family News – Will Prince George One Day Be King?

For now the monarchy is in good hands. Even King Charles’ detractors admit that he has been a pleasant surprise and his heir Prince William, together with his wife Princess Catherine, are popular and beloved royals.
