Why Sarah Ferguson Got A Smaller Divorce Settlement Than Princess Diana

Sarah Ferguson It hardly seems fair that both Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana, close friends and close in age, divorced brothers from the same royal family, and yet one got a far better divorce settlement than the other.

Which lady struck out and which lady scored big following her separation and divorce from one of Queen Elizabeth’s sons?

The answer may surprise you!

Sarah Ferguson And Princess Diana Were Sisters-In-Law But Not Equal When It Came To Divorce Dollars

Sarah and Diana knew each other before either married into the royal family. Once the marriages took place, and things began to turn rocky, their bond grew even closer.

As their respective marriages dwindled down, opinions about them began to shift within the royal family. In fact, the two besties were treated in substantially different manners by their in-laws in their final days.

Sarah Ferguson And Andrew Divorced In 1996

In 1996 the Duke and Duchess, Sarah and Andrew, went their separate ways (even though they currently share the same house!).

For Sarah, the shift in attitude toward her went far south as she was portrayed as the one who contributed most to the breakdown of her marriage. This was in spite of the fact that Sarah, unlike Diana who appeared disjointed in her role as a royal, took to her role easily and was welcomed by The Firm.

Sarah’s marriage broke down reportedly because she was intensely lonely while Andrew was serving in the military.

As the world now knows, for Diana the thorn was Camilla Parker Bowles. When Charles’ affair with Camilla was exposed, Diana received public and royal sympathy for her treatment.

Sarah Ferguson Had A Premonition The End Was In Sight

In her autobiography, My Story: Sarah the Duchess of York, Sarah wrote that in 1991 both women could see the end of their marriage insight. “The year we first put words to the unspeakable idea that had been nudging us in the ribs for some time: that one or both of us might leave the royal family.”

When the queen finally consented to Charles and Diana’s divorce it was widely reported that Diana was given a very generous compensation package, no doubt due to her public humiliation.

This included a three-level apartment at Kensington Palace, access to the private royal jets, and roughly £18 million, plus around £400,000 annually.

What did Sarah get? She is said to have been given just a fraction of what Diana got, more than likely because she was seen as the wrongdoer. Are you reading this, Meghan?
