Why The Queen Wasn’t Seen For Much Of The Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t as visible during her Platinum Jubilee last weekend as people originally expected.

Where The Queen Was

While she did appear on the first day and the last day, she mostly kept to her new home at Windsor Castle, which Prince Charles aptly pointed out was just 20 miles from Buckingham Palace, in hopes that his mother could hear the Saturday night concert in her honor.

The queen also spent part of Saturday at Frogmore Castle to celebrate the first birthday of her great-granddaughter and namesake, Lilibet Diana, Lilibet being the nickname the queen had as a child, and also what her late husband, Prince Philip, called her. It was said to be the first time she had met the little girl as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left Great Britain and their royal duties behind in 2020, opting for a different kind of life in the posh California beach haven of Montecito. This was the first time Harry had returned to the UK with his wife and children since then.

On Sunday, the queen, dressed all in emerald green, did make an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace following the jubilee’s closing pageant. She was there with Prince Charles and Camila Parker Bowles, as well as Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their three children, George, Charlotte, and Louis.

Why The Queen Wasn’t Around More

After 70 years on the throne and being England’s longest-reigning monarch, we’re sure Queen Elizabeth would have wanted to attend more of her own Platinum Jubilee, but her recent health issues — specifically, her mobility issues — got in the way.

“She would not want to stumble — not for her own sake but for the distress it would cause other people,” royal historian Robert Lacy told People, explaining that her walking issues have been getting in the way of other activities.

People also reported that Kate Middleton assured others that the queen was just fine, but very exhausted when she was absent from events on the second day of activities.

The queen has been plagued by health issues for well over half a year now. It was in the fall of 2021 when Queen Elizabeth was first spotted with a walking stick outside Westminster Abbey. She had it again at the opening of the Welsh parliament and even spent a night in the hospital for tests around the same time. She was told to rest during her scaled-back Christmas holidays and even survived Covid 19 in early 2022.
