Today Kate is known by several names. In the UK she is known as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge. In Scotland she is known as the Countess of Strathearn and in Northern Ireland she is known by as Lady Carrickfergus.
When William becomes King, Kate will be given another new name: Queen Consort. But again, there will be a bit of a difference in her title from nation to nation.
Kate will be known as Queen Catherine to the rest of the world for all intents and purposes, but her official title will be queen consort.

What is with the technicality? There’s a reason why Kate is officially a queen consort rather than just queen. It’s because she wasn’t born into the royal family, she married into it via William. According to protocol only women born into the royal family can be titled queen with no qualifier. For example, Kate’s daughter Charlotte would receive the title queen, not queen consort.
Despite the title queen consort, Kate will have a full plate of duties to perform, and she will receive all the perks and privileges that are on tap for someone in her position. In other words, the title queen consort is sort of an asterisk title, but nothing else.
