Many people actually predicted that King Charles would abdicate so that his younger son Prince William could step in. It’s been a long while since Britain had a young monarch, and the next generation is keen to have someone there that will represent their interests.
But surprise, surprise, King Charles decided to take the reins instead of pass it on to his heir. We can’t blame him, and so far Charles has been working to make his mark both locally and on an international level.
If King Charles lives to be as old as his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, William would be 60 when he ascends the throne. So, even though he’s currently the most loved and respected royal, is it possible William would abdicate in order to have Prince
George take the throne at a younger age? This royal expert seems to think William mighta woulda shoulda abdicate.
Queen Elizabeth – Wanted A Quiet Life In The Countryside Raising Horses
Her Majesty’s 70-year reign was a happy and glorious one. And though it had its rough sides and painful times, its end was met with one of the largest celebrations in history.
On November 15, “The Queen: Her Life” will be released by royal biographer Andrew Morton. Yes, the Andrew Morton of “Diana: Her True Story – In Her Words” fame.
In order to promote this new release, the author spoke with Marie Claire about the monarchy that Queen Elizabeth left behind when she passed away on September 8.
Morton revealed that the book provides insights into Queen Elizabeth’s early years preparing for a role she wasn’t born to have. However, her uncle’s abdication had meant that she was soon made to look upon it as a reality.
“Every night when she went to bed, she prayed that her parents would produce a brother, so that he would take on the role of King,” the biographer told Marie Claire.
“Her ambition was to live in the countryside with dogs, horses and children.”
King Charles – Isn’t A “Reluctant Royal”, Andrew Morton Says
Speaking on whether Charles and William were as reluctant as the Queen to see themselves as the monarch, Morton opined: “I think Charles has waited long enough, I think he has some ideas for the monarchy that he wants to put into effect, so I wouldn’t say that he’s reluctant at all.”
This doesn’t mean that William is as willing as his father to become the ruling monarch, especially since, according to Morton, he views it as a job rather than a calling.
“I think William has always seen it as a job as opposed to a calling, and I’d be interested—if we all live that long—that when
George becomes King, whether William will abdicate, and give his son his middle years, as it were, to reign,” he said.
Reflecting on how the British people handle abdication as a “dirty word”, he hinted that it’s reasonable that even though
“Spanish, Dutch, [and] the Pope all abdicated,” Prince William might choose not to.
