Worsening Relations With Buckingham Palace: Harry And Meghan Stepping On Too Many Toes

Controversy seems to be following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wherever they go. The couple has seemed fated to cause conflict from the moment Prince Harry popped the question to the American actress until today. Yet, all the apparent disputes between Prince Harry and his brother Prince William, Meghan Markle with Kate Middleton (as well as her own staff and others), pale in comparison to the confrontational nature of their recent speeches.

As many know, it’s not normal for members of the British Royal family to get political. The status quo is that members of The Firm keep quiet on their own, privately-held beliefs when it comes to political issues. From Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on down, mum is the word as the whole family strives to remain non-partisan. As many know, the reason for that is the fact that the British monarchy must be seen as a figurehead for the entire nation … and not simply the leaders of this or that faction or political party.

Now, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are turning everything on its head. Of course, some might argue that since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as senior members of the Royal Family they are free to express themselves as they see fit. That might be true to an extent, but it’s also been noted that Harry and Meghan have retained certain titles and they’re still being entirely funded by Prince Charles’ Duchy of Cornwall. In light of those facts, a legitimate question is whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are really as independent and free as they would like.

In any case, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been creating quite the embarrassment for Queen Elizabeth and indeed the entirety of the monarchy. Both Harry and Meghan have been attending charitable events and more remotely through Zoom calls, and in each, their message has become increasingly political. In fact, many Britons see Harry and Meghan’s comments as two of the most privileged people on the planet lecturing the rest of the country from their luxurious abode far away in America.

As many commentators in the U.K. have mentioned, it’s not a good look for Prince Harry and Meghan.

Indeed, Prince Harry and Meghan both have recently been castigated in the media of the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. The Duke and Duchess have been called hypocritical, pandering, and worse.

Finally, with all the negative publicity surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, some believe that it will cause Queen Elizabeth to snap. Oh, certainly she will not disown Prince Harry … but there could be further restrictions she could place upon him. Queen Elizabeth could certainly revoke her gifts of real estate. She could lift what remaining titles Harry and Meghan possess. Queen Elizabeth could cut the arrogant Harry and Meghan down to size if she so wished.

The real question here is whether the British Royal family will bring Harry and Meghan to heel … or whether the two will be allowed to continue making the British Royal family appear full of unnecessary conflict and division.
