90 Day Fiancé has featured its first lesbian couple on the TLC reality show. Many fans are concerned that Erika Owens and Stephanie Matto are being used as a marketing ploy to attract male viewers, rather than empowering the LGBTQ community. Fans also believe Erika and Stephanie are not being presented in an equal light to the other cast members.

90 Fiancé and the introduction of LGBTQ cast members

Erika Owens and Stephanie Matto were introduced in the 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days prequel show on TLC. This prequel reveals the contesting couples meeting for the first time in person after traveling from all over the world. While this has formerly featured heterosexual couples, TLC has taken the step to explore further and include LGBTQ cast members.

Stephanie was seen to travel to Australia to first meet her new girlfriend, Erika, but the TLC show also outlined her story of wishing to come out to her family as a bisexual. She wanted them to open up and accept Erika. However, since the couple was introduced on the show, a YouTube video has shown Stephanie coming out as a bisexual three years ago, which contradicts her story on the show.

Stephanie and Erika’s first kiss looked staged

According to viewers on Reddit, many fans felt Erika and Stephanie’s first kiss looked staged and not natural and genuine. While most first kisses are, at the best of times, uncomfortable, 90 Day Fiancé’s footage of the pair locking lips on an escalator after Stephanie traveled the world does indeed feel staged.

As their lips met, the cameras zoomed in on the pair, while playing music that made it seem like a scene in a porn movie. This is what has led fans to believe the couple is being used as a marketing tool to attract a wider male audience and gain them more views.

Viewers feel Erika and Stephanie should have been introduced on the TLC show as two real women, trying to find their perfect match, just like all the other couples participating in 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days. It must be agreed that having the TLC show explore other relationships is a good thing, but this must be handled sensitively and not at the expense of Erika and Stephanie themselves.

Keep watching 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days to find out what happens in Erika and Stephanie’s story.
