Find out why Chicago Fire fan favorite Jesse Spencer has bid farewell to the show. And discover if and when the Australian actor who portrayed Captain Matthew Casey for 10 seasons might return below.
Chicago Fire Star Jesse Spencer’s Final Episode?!
Since Chicago Fire debuted in 2021, Jesse Spencer has soared to fame as a series regular on the Dick Wolf-produced firefighter drama. But although his role as Captain Matthew Casey seemed fated to last as long as the series, Spencer just revealed his exit plan.
On Wednesday, Spencer appeared in his last episode as a Chicago Fire series regular, per USA Today. That episode, which marks the 200th episode of the show, offered a new story line for Casey.
(Warning: Spoilers ahead!) In that episode, Casey explains to his co-workers and his girlfriend Sylvie Brett (Kara Kilmer) and his colleagues about why he has decided to leave. His new plan involves a move to Portland, Oregon.
For the next three years, Casey tells his colleagues, he will help take care of his deceased friend Andy Darden’s sons. Viewers may remember that Darden (Corey Sorenson) passed away in the Chicago Fire premiere. And when Darden’s son Griffin (Cameron Scott Roberts) asked for help, Casey made the switch to the Portland Fire Department. But will Casey remain in Portland permanently?
Chicago Fire News – Will Chicago Fire Star Jesse Spencer Return To Show?
Spencer joined Chicago Fire executive producer Derek Haas in a discussion about the actor’s exit on a media Zoom call. The two revealed that they created an exit plan to “at least get Casey to 200 episodes.”
And Jesse expressed the challenges he faced in deciding to quit Chicago Fire, calling it a “difficult decision because I’ve loved the show from the start. But there’s other things I’d like to do in the future and there’s some family I need to take care of,” he explained.
As for whether a future Chicago Fire episode or two might see the return of Spencer’s character? Spencer also discussed Casey’s romantic relationship with Brett. “They are trying to make this relationship work,” pointed out the actor. “But they know that he’s leaving so they’re sort of saying nothing’s going to change.”
And overall, Jesse feels pleased with the way that his time on Chicago Fire ended in terms of being a series regular. He called the story line involving Casey moving to Oregon “organic.”
But Casey may yet return, hinted the actor and exec producer. “We’re going to keep it alive,” said Haas. “So this is a three-year commitment Casey is making, but hopefully we’ll see him before those three years are done. We are going to hear his voice after the 200(th),” he hinted.
And Spencer agreed, stating that he feels open to “the potential for me to come back. My home here with my wife is in Chicago, so I’m still going to be here, but I’m just stepping back for right now.”
