Disney+ just launched last week but it looks most of the content on the streaming service may not last forever. Subscribers have noticed on major flaw on the platform that they’re not too happy about. All of those beloved movies and television shows come with expiration dates. It has some people wondering if they should stick to this new service.
Disney broke records last week with its new streaming service that’s set to rival Netflix, HBO Max, CBS All Access, and more. Disney+ has an impressive catalogue, an affordable monthly price, and a wide array of content for people of all ages. However, subscribers have noticed that their favorite television shows and movies won’t last forever, according to Yahoo! Lifestyle. That means they’ll have to watch as much content as they can in order to make the most of this service.
The Twitter account, Stitch Kindgom, took notice of the expiration feature on the platform. It can be found tucked within the Disney+ metadata. It includes a line of HTML codes that reveal the content has an expiration date. Some of those expiration dates come as soon as this year. For example, The Princess and the Frog has an expiration date of Nov. 25, 2019.
Subscribers were understandably upset over the expiration dates. They argued that this metadata shouldn’t be hidden within the service. One subscriber said that this metadata doesn’t accurately portray this information and “could trigger a cover art change or a section the title is displayed in.” Other subscribers argued that maybe the technicalities haven’t been finalized and that the expiration dates are just “temporary placeholders.”
Most subscribers will be upset to hear that some of their classics and favorites will not last in this Disney vault. Disney has relied on the media over the past few weeks to drum up excitement for its new streaming service. In the past, the company revealed limited edition DVDs from its vault. Disney also has its own movie club, in which fans can get their favorite TV shows and movies in the mail every month.
Most subscribers were hoping that Disney+ would be the place where they could watch all of their favorite content without any disruptions. That means no ads and no expiration dates. If some of the classic movies and television shows are only available temporarily, then it could hurt the overall appeal of this new service. However, it’s not uncommon as the content on Hulu and Netflix come with their own expiration dates on a regular basis.
What are your thoughts on the Disney+ content having expiration dates? Will this deter you from using the service? Sound off below in the comments section.
