The Gossip Girl reboot is currently in the works with HBO Max. The soapy teen drama is said to be completely different from the original. While Kristen Bell will return to the series as “Gossip Girl” herself, it won’t contain any of the original cast members. The new Gossip Girl is said to focus more on diversity and social media.
The showrunner wants to portray a more accurate representation of the diversity that’s seen in New York City. At the Vulture Festival over the weekend, writer and producer Joshua Safran talked about the HBO Max reboot, saying that audiences will see a more diverse cast moving forward. Safran was aware that the original Gossip Girl cast wasn’t as diverse. Even when he attended a private school in New York City in the 90s, he was aware of the diversity around him. So, he wants that reflected in the new series.
The original Gossip Girl series was slammed for its diversity problem that was apparent. The reboot will focus on a new crop of elite and wealthy socialites, but the cast is said to be a mix of diverse and LGBTQ characters. The students will be just as sassy and mean as the iconic cast of mid-2000s. They’re just going to look like your everyday New York City prep school kids.
Safran also hinted that there will be “a lot of queer content on this show.” He wants to write storylines that reflect where the world is at in the present time. But, of course, he understands that it has to live up to his soap standards. The Gossip Girl reboot will have a twist and all of the storylines will relate back to that twist. Back in July, HBO Max announced its interest in a Gossip Girl reboot, which will feature a new cast of teens living their privileged lives at New York City’s Upper East Side. Original creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will also return to the series.
There haven’t been many other details about the Gossip Girl reboot. But an official summary about the show revealed that it will also focus on social media. The new teens in school are introduced to the world of social media through the eyes of Gossip Girl. This new series will address the issues that everyday teens face with social media. Not to mention, they will be living their lives out in the public eye more than ever.
