The Green Lantern writer says that the television show is a top priority right now. A Green Lantern spinoff series has been pitched around, even to The CW, but hasn’t been greenlit as of yet. But that doesn’t mean the Green Lantern writer has ruled out the opportunity of taking the series to the big screen. Writer Geoff Johns said that he will be working double duty on both the movie and the television show. He’s currently working on Greg Berlanti’s upcoming series for HBO Max. Back in 2014, the two announced the Green Lantern reboot produced by DC Films.
However, the film hasn’t come to fruition. The Green Lantern reboot has been a top priority for the production company after the 2011 installment failed to win over fans. While the Green Lantern reboot has struggled to generate interest, Green Lantern Corps is still in development. Johns is known as one of the most famous Green Lantern writers at DC Comics. He earned the position in June 2018.
The DC picture would star Hal Jordan mentoring John Stewart, known as the two most iconic Lanterns in history. Warner Bros. also plans on having the franchise on television with Berlanti as the DC TV producer. He’s currently working on a series for the HBO Max streaming platform. There are no other details on the Green Lantern series other than it will be one of the many DC series included on the platform. During the announcement of HBO Max’s unveiling, Berlanti spoke about his biggest project yet. He wouldn’t reveal who would star in the series, but now Berlanti has a partner to work on him with this project.
According to a report via Variety, Johns will be working with Berlanti again for the untitled Green Lantern series. This isn’t the first time the two has worked together in the DC Universe. Berlanti worked as one of the co-writers of a film that starred Ryan Reynolds while Johns worked in a consulting position. However, Berlanti’s original vision was altered when he was replaced by Martin Campbell. Since then, Johns and Berlanti have worked together on other DC TV shows such as The Flash and Titans.
Since Johns is working on both Green Lantern projects, it could mean the series will feature other characters while Hal and John star in the feature film. The series could star Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Kyle Rayner, or Simon Baz. Including any of these characters would allow both projects to be uniquely different from one another.
