Madam Secretary says goodbye to its fans. Tea Leoni, who plays Secretary of State-turned President Elizabeth McCord, talked about the show’s sixth and final season in an interview with the Daily News. She said that now was a perfect time was to end the show since it started to outpace the political drama. Leoni felt that the CBS series could no longer compete with the television-style politics drama that currently plays out in this landscape. Madam Secretary was nothing like House of Cards, Scandal or Veep. It was an idealistic how that viewed the Oval Office through rose-colored glasses. Some would argue that it was too idealist in style.

Political affiliations are rarely mentioned on the series because it didn’t matter whether you were a Republican or a Democrat. All that matter is that you cared about the people. While the series did address issues, they often realized that nothing is a quick and easy fix. Although they tried to do that at times. “I mean, we created peace in the Middle East in one episode,” joked Tim Daly, who plays First Gentleman of the United States Henry McCord. Madam Secretary was a political drama that wasn’t meant to be realistic or be taken seriously. Even when the show ventured into immigration issues or international interference during elections, it wasn’t meant to be believable. The show’s writers and producers wanted to keep it that way.

For over six seasons, Madam Secretary was a perfect escape for political buffs and pop culture lovers alike. The show still many issues such as the Cuban trade embargo, an Iranian nuclear deal, family separation at the border, and a terrorist attack on the UN delegation. Elizabeth McCord also found a way to get the U.S. people on her side and to elect a woman president for the very first time. Not only did Elizabeth win the presidency, she was able to do that while juggling a marriage and a family.

According to Leoni, Elizabeth’s personal and professional success “should be celebrated and not feared and not manipulated and not played down.” While Madam Secretary wasn’t a perfect show, it still provided Americans with some much-needed hope in a turbulent political environment. It made people believe that politics can help people in the end. It believed that politician could help people. What are your thoughts on the series finale of Madam Secretary?
