Mystery Science 3000 Is the Latest Show to Be Axed By Netflix

Netflix has canceled Mystery Science Theater 3000 after just two seasons. This cult classic sci-fi comedy series was made possible through a record-breaking Kickstarter program. But the streaming giant has decided to pull the plug on the series after two new seasons. Creator and executive producer Joel Hodgson broke the news on Tuesday, Nov. 26. He told fans not to lose hope just yet since the show may find new life on another platform.

MST3K host Jonah Ray threw some serious shade on social media, according to TVLine. He revealed that Netflix didn’t want to do another season of the beloved show. Ray hinted that the show follows a line of canceled Netflix originals including Anne With an E, Get Down, Lilyhammer, and One Day at a Time. The MST3K group also finds them in good company with Jessica Jones, Lady Dynamite, and Tuca & Bertie.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 originally aired on an independent television station in Minnesota on Thanksgiving Day back in 1988. Hodgson played the role of Joel Robinson, a custodian at the Gizmonic Institute who is shot into space by his fellow employers.

He’s then forced to live on the Satellite of Love with his new robot friends. This means he has to deal with terrible sci-fi or low-grade horror movies. Time magazine hailed the movie as one of the 100 best TV shows of all time. The revival, which starred Felicia Day, Jonah Ray, and Patton Oswalt, was critically acclaimed.

Hodgson revealed to fans of Netflix’s decision to halt the production of the MST3K project in an email for supporters of the revival’s Kickstarter. Both Hodgson and Ray confirmed the news in separate social media posts. However, it seems like Hodgson wants to keep this project going in another way.

This latest cancellation by Netflix is another that angered a dedicated fanbase. Hodgson hopes to keep the show alive with new projects. MST3K just launched its own Twitter channel and wants to celebrate the first episode with a Thanksgiving Day marathon this coming weekend.
