Netflix would love for the its new series The Witcher to be like Game of Thrones. But it looks like this original series will be more horror than fantasy. If you’re familiar with The Witcher video games, then you know that they’re fantasy RPGs that are based on the short stories and novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. But The Witcher Netflix series is said to have more of a horror element to it, according to visual effects supervisor Julian Parry.
Parry sat down for an interview with SFX Magazine about the much buzzed about series. He revealed that The Witcher is going to be horrific to watch at times because of the special effects. Parry wants to remove the fantasy element out of this series because he believes that it can be downright chilling. However, it’s still very much a fantasy-based series but it’s grounded in horror. For example, some of the monsters are downright frightening.
The show is expected to have plenty of monsters like the Striga. You can also expect to see armies of Cintrans, Temerians, and more. If you also watched Game of Thrones, then you know how important CGI when it comes to featuring monsters. The upcoming The Witcher trailer gave fans a glimpse of a clash between two major armies. While The Witcher is such a deeply personal story, it’s still going to have hints of horror and fantasy that will captivate audiences. It’ll be interesting to see how this story plays out on the small screen.
However, Netflix is hoping that The Witcher will become the next Game of Thrones. Ever since the HBO show has become a pop culture phenomenon, every cable network and streaming service has been looking for their own version of the hit fantasy series. Thrones has catapulted the fantasy genre into the mainstream by combining a mix of sex, violence, and politics. These elements, combined with fantasy and CGI-generated dragons, made Game of Thrones one of the most exciting television shows of all time.
While the Striga is horrifying to look at, there will be a little bit of magic here and there. The Witcher is said to make its debut on Netflix on Dec. 20. However, a second season hasn’t yet been confirmed. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich is onboard for the second season. She recently revealed that she has seven seasons in mind for the series.
