Supernatural Prequel ‘The Winchesters’ Begins Production

CW has picked up a Prequel for its beloved series Supernatural. The Winchesters will focus on the story of John and Mary Winchester, and it has already gained a script commitment. The project is in development at the network, and is executive produced by Supernatural star, Jensen Ackles, who will be reprising his role in the series as the narrator, and his wife Danneel, a Supernatural recurring guest star.

The prequel will be written/executive produced by another Supernatural alum, former co-executive producer Robbie Thompson.

“The Winchesters” – Details

The spinoff will be based on the story of Sam and Dean Winchester’s parents, John and Mary Winchester, both of whom were oft referenced in Supernatural and were originally played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith.

“Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary,” reads the show description. “Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester, The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”

Supernatural ended its 15-season run on November 19, 2020, after gathering a loyal fan base, cult following and numerous fanfictions based on its characters and storylines. While it started pretty straightforward, it soon became complicated with the introduction of a diverse set of supernatural beings, and even Dean and Sam literally went to hell and returned. The series was also known for incorporating some of the stories and romantic relationships fans wanted to see in the show.

“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?'” Jensen told Deadline. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

The Winchesters News – John And Mary Winchester’s Story On Supernatural

For fans of Supernatural, the names John and Mary Winchester are nothing new. As much of the series was actually based on how the brothers Sam and Dean feel about their parents, a tidbit of the couple’s story is already known.

Mary used to be a hunter who retired to settle down and start a family with John, but she was unfortunately killed by a demon when Sam (Jared Padalecki) was just six months old. (She also got resurrected 33 years later, only to be killed again.)

Her husband John, who formerly had no idea of his wife’s past as a supernatural monster hunter, became a hunter as a means of seeking vengeance. He raised Sam and Dean to become hunters as well.

He disappeared when the boys were in their 20s, paving the way for the start of Supernatural.

Two spinoffs from Supernatural have already been attempted, but neither moved forward.
